A Feeling For The NOW

2/28/2015

What does being in the NOW feel like?

  • Choosing to feel good without the internal demands and recriminations.
  • Consciously choosing every minute to let the past and the self-imposed restrictions go.
  • Understanding that THIS MOMENT is truly all there is.
  • Understanding that the feeling of joy is more important than things or accomplishments.

The Bad Seed Manager

How many managers do you know who have no management skills? I bet it didn't take long for you to come up with several. It’s quite the phenomenon, but today I’m more interested in their ability to damage a business. A manager has a lot of leeway in how things are done. Consequently, it is important that the manager be invested in the success of the company or the project.

If a manager is incompetent, it’s obvious how they can damage the business. What about if the manager is all about themselves? If this is the case, they can deliberately make sweeping changes to a business that will run it into the ground, truly a bad seed. I have seen this happen.

The Bad Seed

So what should you look for so that you can cut your losses before it’s too late? Ask yourself if any of these describe your manager.
  • dictatorial
  • fails to listen to suggestions
  • unwilling or unable to explain rational reasons for changes
  • has a poverty consciousness
  • insincerity or phoniness when dealing with customers
  • fails to consider the long term needs of the business
  • rarely institutes changes that increase the bottom line or improve the public face of the business
  • moody

Okay, if any of these stand out for you, then you need to assess more closely what impact the manager is having on the bottom line of your business.

The Leader

So, what should you look for in a manager?
  • a manager who is just as involved in the process every day as everyone else, who steps up when there is a need rather than putting a strain on others
  • a manager who listens to suggestions and asks questions and then analyzes them against the mission of the business or the project
  • a manager who thoroughly thinks through his/her actions before coming to a decision
  • a manager who isn’t always expecting the next shoe to drop, who moves forward instead of always looking over their shoulder
  • a manager who is always creating new ways for the business to prosper
  • a manager who recognizes the importance of social skills in developing the reputation of the business.

Too often, business owners or boards of directors give people management positions who have no experience, minimal leadership skills, and no social skills, and then a year or two down the road, they wonder what happened. Dare I say it? Duh!

Shuck The Voices In Your Head

2/21/2015

Picture
Our minds have so much power. They can shift our mood in a nanosecond from happy to sad and just as quickly send us down the rabbit hole into feeling morose. It can convince us that we are not qualified to be writers or painters or mechanics or technicians or doctors or physicists. How does this happen? Are we not in charge of our minds?

Of course, we are! The problem is that we don't seem to realize it. We let ourselves be convinced that the random thoughts created by past experiences have more power than we do. So we give in to them. We think it's some spirit whispering in our ear or our intuition. It is in fact a bunch of baloney!

If we want to do something, AND if we move our feet to accomplish the things or the training necessary in the physical world, AND if we don't let the "voices in our heads" get in the way of our rational thought processes, AND if we don't give up, we can take charge of our minds and accomplish wondrous things. In that process, we are changed because we now know we have the power within us to reach for the goals we desire in our lives.

Looking at the picture accompanying this post, I have to say that, in reality, our minds have more power than our hands because our mind directs our hands.

Positive Thinking Won't Do It For You!

Does positive thinking work? No, it doesn't if that’s all you’re doing — thinking positive thoughts. Many have taken a shortcut version of Norman Vincent Peale’s stance on the power of positive thinking and have tried to change their lives dramatically by thinking positive thoughts about some part of their life they want to change.  When it didn't work, they gave up or became one of those people who snort derisively when the idea of positive thinking is brought up.

The first chapter in Peale’s well-known book is titled “Believe in Yourself.” Why do you think this was the first thing he talked about? It’s because your belief system about yourself is made up of thoughts and feelings you have accepted about yourself. These attitudes influence everything you do. They are not just random thoughts. They are thoughts with strong, dominant feelings attached to them! Unless you address the feelings you have about yourself, if you just ignore their existence, it won’t matter how positive you convince yourself you are about some goal. Under the surface of your conscious thoughts, all those garbage thoughts  and feelings will be doing their work.

Another chapter is titled “Expect the Best and Get It.” I’ve often heard people parrot the phrase “expect the best,” who apparently think that if you just say what you want and expect to get it that it will magically appear. Oh, it may appear, but there are other things at work before it does even if you’re not aware. A belief in the idea that you are established in the unlimited substance of God and need only “ask, believe, and receive” is forming. You are releasing garbage ideas about yourself; you are imagining yourself with what you want; you are creating feelings that will join with your thoughts to manifest what you desire.

There is a Universal system in place that will take you where you want to go, but it works a lot faster if you recognize that you have to make an investment in what you want through BOTH your thoughts and feelings.

What I Love About My Life

Picture
I love the quiet moments in between the hectic moments.
I love the hectic moments because they help me appreciate the quiet moments.
I love the moments when my creative juices are flowing, and words flow easily from me.
I love the moments when I know what I need to do next.
I love the moments when I am self-remembering.
I love ALL the moments in my life because without them I wouldn't be who I am.
I love the potential that still lies within me to one day recognize who I really am.

    Life can become so twisted
at times that we lose the balance in our lives and don't even know it until we land face down in the garbage we've accumulated.
